happy new year, gary: though i've been to your nursery several times in the past five years, i've never had the fortune of meeting you. your assistant (the sandy blond), however, was glad to see me leave after i tried to pick her brains, purchase all of your sabal palmettos (before you wanted to sell them), and hang around waiting for you (to negotiate wholesale prices). you can then imagine my anxiety when i saw your site, and learned that you are indeed selling those beautiful sabals this spring. will you please respond to me as soon as possible per my inquiry on wholesale prices and becoming a distributor of your gorgeous specimens. i look forward to hearing from you or seeing you soon! with regards, i am Earl Ijames, Lake Shore Palms

Gary: I really enjoyed your story and palm photos! I live in Northern New Jersey where I just got buried in about 22 inches of snow. I have been growing palms (Sabal minor, S. palmetto, T. fortunei, W. robusta, and B. capitata) since the spring of 1989. All are protected for the winter up here with the exception of Sabal minor, which has set seed now two years in a row. I visited Wilmington, North Carolina over the summer and really enjoyed seeing all of the palms and other tender plants that you just don't see here in New Jersey. I hope to relocate to the south at some point. Looking foeward to the spring already! Take care. John Houghton in New Jersey Z6b.

Hi Gary, I think your palms are beautiful. I have driven through N. Carolina several times in the past and always thought of it as the first place we started seeing palms. The fan and palmetto palms have always been my favourite. Of course the palms in Florida are beautiful, but I always thought it was more special to see them growing where you don't take them for granted. I felt the same way when I first saw palms growing in Victoria and Vancouver on Canada's pacific coast. If you think people are skeptical of palms in Carolina , ask them about palms in Canada. But surely they are there and there are some really large and beautiful ones. God bless you and your palms and all the effort you have made.

Hi Gary: Nice web site. Melody(my wife) and I visited your nursery in the 1980's. We have fruiting Sabal minor from seed, S. louisiana, Rhapidophyllum, and several Trachys from seed with 1 to 2.5 feet of trunk. Do you have seed of Sabal 'Birmingham'for sale? Have a good new year, Steve

Found your site by browsing through the garden launch pad. Had a lot in Beaufort Co. NC, but had to sell in recently. Was so looking forward to growing camellias and palms. BUT have not given up on the idea of retiring in East Carolina. I was astonished at how many species grew on the 1 acre we had. I will look forward to checking you site again for further information on your palm collection. I am currently attempting to grow a Needle Palm here in Northern Va.

Your site was nice to view. I am a partner within a strictly palm business called Piedmont Palms, LLC. We sell, consult with customers, and install different species of palms here in central SC. It is nice to see some of your trees doing so well.

Hi Gary, Very impressive Web-Site. I hope to be able to visit your nursery one day.I purchased two needle palms from you this spring. You were very kind in delivering them to Pat McCraken in Raleigh so that he could in turn deliver them to my friend who was visiting Washington. My friend and I each planted our Needle Palm early in the season and now they are all wrapped, mulched and snow covered for extra protection. I look forward to letting you know if they survive our cold winters up here. From what I read about this amazing palm it may be possible with the protection provided. Best regards, Marc

Thanks for the very interesting pics! Sabal 'Birmingham' has proven hardy to -11*f in Tulsa with only 20% tip burn. Palmetto seems quite hardy in OKC staying green to -3*f, but Sabal louisiana trunks much quicker than palmetto in OKC. ZONE 7 IS SABAL COUNTRY !!!
